ASML

ASML’s advanced lithography systems achieve overlay performance below 2 nanometer by precisely positioning wafers. Initially placed with 80-micrometer precision, the systems further refine this to sub-nanometer accuracy using an optical alignment sensor that reads alignment marks on the wafer.

At this level of precision, polarization effects must be precisely controlled to prevent errors in alignment.
